Hey everyone! I hope you are keeping healthy and safe amidst all bugs and viruses about! So this month I'm going to discuss the pros and cons of the vegan diet, and perhaps let you guys decide if it is for you or not.
Pros
- Cost - buying pulses are much cheaper than meat and still provide a good source of protein.
- Environment - eating more vegetables are better for the environment and can prevent food waste unlike animal meat.
- Animal - friendly - poultry and live stock undergo cruelty before they arrive on our dinner plates.
- Nutrition - it a good way of getting your 5 - a - day.
- Cooking and baking - can be quicker and requires less ingredients at times.
Cons
- Cost - some products can be expensive such as coconut oil.
- Low in vitamins and minerals - such as iodine, selenium, vitamin D and calcium.
So what's the verdict?
The key is to be mindful! If we think of the Eatwell Guide - the main groups we will need to consider is protein and dairy and alternatives. So here's some tips below:
- Bulk up on your pulses to ensure you are getting enough protein.
- Eat more nuts such as walnuts and almonds , which are a good source of omega 3 fats.
- Ensure your dairy alternatives are fortified with calcium and vitamin D.
- Consider supplements for nutrients lacking such as Vitamin B12, selenium and iodine which are usually found in animal meats and seafood.
And that's a wrap! Thanks again for taking the time to read my blog! Look out for another interesting topic next month! Soph xx
